The green-eyed monster…

Jun 4, 2010 | Uncategorized

… is actually a girl with brown eyes who is experiencing professional jealousy for the first time in her life.  And, ladies and gentlemen, IT DOES NOT FEEL GOOD.

I try to keep up with what’s happening in publishing as best I can.  I subscribe to Publisher’s Marketplace, and like thousands of other PM members, I receive regular updates on new book deals.  I also read a lot of writers’ and agents’ blogs regularly, and get a lot of publishing news from them.

It’s probably just me, but I feel like everybody and their uncle has a book deal right now.  And I’m happy for them.  And their uncles. I really am.  But it’s hard not to feel just a teensy weensy tiny little bit sorry for myself, too.

I think it’s a testament to how important this is to me.  With other jobs, if somebody got promoted, I’d be like, “Cool! Let’s go out for drinks!” and the next morning, I’d be bringing muffins to work.  With this job, whenever I see that another hopeful writer has landed a book deal, I’m applauding on the outside, and doing the ugly cry on the inside.

Professional jealousy is a bitch. She must be killed.
